The Island of Astypalaia
 Astypalaia has traveled through time and its name remained unchanged, apart from slight alterations in its pronunciation, such as Astoupalia, Astropalia and Stypalia. According to mythology, Astypalaia and Europe were daughters of Phoinika and Perimedes. As a result of the union of Astypalaia and Poseidon, the Argonaut Agaios, and the king of Kos, Evrypylos, came into being. Astypalaia was first inhabited by the Kares, who called the island Pyrra (fire), due to its red colour.
The ancient Greeks called Astypalaia “The Banquet of the Gods”, because of the abundance of fragrant flowers and seeds.
Astypalaia is famous for its honey products. As intriguing as it may seem, snakes are unable to survive on the island and for that reason Aristotles wrote “the land of Astypalaia is an enemy to snakes”. The Romans, who would evaluate each region’s culinary delights on arrival, called Astypalaia “Ichthyoessa” (bearer of fish), because of its plethora of good fish. Furthermore, Plinios claimed that the snails on the island had therapeutic powers. Astypalaia was under the occupation of Crete during the Minoan Era and later became part of Greece when settlers came from Megara. |
